6.2.6 Cayman Islands: No terrestrial Zoos
Location: Cayman Turtle Farm, Grand Cayman Island
Commercially raises sea turtles. This is a turtle farm, turtle conservation facility, tourist attraction, restaurant and souvenir facility.
It is an intensive turtle production farm which was started in 1968 [36 years experience in the rearing of sea turtles]. Produces about 1800 turtles per year for local consumption.
Species raised:

  • green sea turtle [Chelonia mydas]
  • hawksbill turtle [Eretmochelys imbricata].
  • Loggerhead turtle [Caretta caretta].
  • Leatherback turtle [Dermochelys coriacae].

Between 1980 and 1991 it released 26,995 turtles. The main species reared is the green sea turtle [Chelonia mydas].
